A recent beta version of macOS Monterey contains references to a High-Power Mode.
It sounds…useful.
But what is it good for, exactly?

What Is High-Power Mode?
One thing worth noting is that the Mac has had several power-saving features for a while.

But what do you get exactly?
After all, doesnt the Mac already run at full speed on battery power?
There are two obvious possibilities: overclocking the CPU, and letting the brakes off those fans.
Apple Silicon is able to run fast, with minimal heat.
Thats why we dont have fans in iPhones, iPads, or MacBook Airs.
When the M1 Macs first launched, testers immediately compared the fanless MacBook Air with the fan-equipped MacBook Pro.
The difference was minimal, undetectable even, as youd expect for two computers using the same chip.
But for sustained workvideo renders, for examplethe Pro got the job done much quicker.
What Is High-Power Mode For?
So, what can you do with it?
And what about gaming?
Professional software could take advantage of it.
High-Power Mode is a great idea.
Hopefully Apple will finish this feature sooner rather than later.
