Single-purpose machines are way less stressful than multi-function computers.

This is the Kobowriter.

Its simple, offers zero built-in distractions, and will always be waiting where you left off.

In short, its the perfect comment on all thats wrong with your tablet or smartphone.

Kobowriter

you’ve got the option to make your own Kobowriter.

Right now the software part only supports the French AZERTY layout, but why let that stop you?

Sinclair QL

It strongly resembles the ’80s-era Sinclair QL.

Setting it up is surprisingly straightforward, but there are off-the-shelf products that do the same thing.

Not Tik-Tok popular or PopSocket popular, but nerd-popular.

Theres a certain kind of geek that loves these single-purpose devices, and I think I may know why.

They may be primitive by todays standards, but they have two clear advantages over general-purpose computers.

you’re able to learn muscle memory for these controls, until you forget about them.

A stick-shift car is the same.

The other advantage of a single-purpose machine is that you always come back to the same place.

A typewriter doesnt activate its screensaver, crash, and require that you restart the typewriter app.

A pianos keys always play the same notes when you hit them.

And so it is with these basic e-ink and LCD typewriters.

The Enemy of Distraction

A few years ago, you couldnt move for distraction-free writing apps.

I find this insulting.

If you cant ignore a few menus or folder icons, youve got bigger problems.

The real source of distraction is the gear.

Instagram, WhatsApp, TikToktheyre all a swipe away.

Switch it off, and switch it back on a week later, and nothing has changed.

That counts for a lot.
