What Is an XLSM File?
A file with the XLSMfile extensionis an Excel macro-enabled workbook file created in Excel 2007 or newer.
The data can be cataloged within separatesheets, all stored in a single workbook file.

See ourList of Executable File Extensionsfor a listing of file extensions to avoid and why.
you might use XLSM files without Excel with free programs likeOpenOffice CalcandWPS Office Spreadsheets.
Another example of afree Office alternativethat lets you edit and save back to this format isMicrosoft Excel Online.

Google Sheetsworks, too, Details for how to do that are below.
Quattro Pro, a part ofWordPerfect Office, supports this format as well, but it’s not free.
The freeOfficeSuitesupports the format on computers and phones.

Another way to convert one is to use afree document file converter.
Here’s how:
Upload it to yourGoogle Driveaccount throughNew>File upload.
ChooseFolder uploadinstead if you should probably upload an entire folder of them.
Right-hit the XLSM file in Google Drive and selectOpen with>Google Sheets.
It will automatically convert to a format that lets you read and use the file with Google Sheets.
Both the original file and the converted one now exist in your Google Drive account.
you might also use Google Sheets to convert the file to a different format.
Still Can’t Open It?
XISE is one example where the file extension resembles XLSM.
Files with that extension are actually projects used by a program ISE fromXilinx.
Using Excel to open that kind of file just won’t work.
Newer versions of Excel use MHTML orMHTto publish Excel documents to HTML.
