This article applies to Microsoft 365, 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, and 2007.
The process is similar for other Office applications.
Right-hit the selected text to bring up an editing menu.

From the menu, selectLink.
In theInsert Hyperlinkdialog box, in theLink Tosection, selectExisting File or Web Page.
If you want to link to a web page, in theAddressfield bang out the URL of the page.

Alternatively, if you want to link to a document, chooseCurrent Folder,Browsed Pages, orRecent Files.
Select your file, then selectOK.
The text you selected shows up as linked text.

Insert a Bookmark
Position your cursor where you want the bookmark to be.
On the ribbon, selectInsert.
In theLinksgroup, selectBookmark.

In theBookmarkdialog box, in theBookmark namefield, key in a name for your bookmark, then selectAdd.
The name should reflect the content nearby so you could easily identify it later.
To create a link to your bookmark, position your cursor where you want the link to appear.

In theLinksgroup, selectLink.
In theInsert Hyperlinkdialog box, underLink to, selectPlace in This Document.
UnderSelect a place in this document, choose the bookmark you want to link to.

The link appears at the location you indicated in your document.
For example, you cancreate a tablein your document.
Create a caption for your item.

First, go for the item.
On the ribbon, selectReferences.
In theCaptionsgroup, selectInsert Caption.

In theCaptiondialog box, in theCaptionfield, jot down a caption for your element.
In theOptionssection, make the appropriate selections.
The caption appears with the element.

To create a cross-reference to the item, place your cursor where you want the cross-reference to appear.
In theCaptionsgroup, selectCross-reference.
In theCross-referencedialog box, underReference bang out, selectTable.

UnderInsert reference to, selectEntire caption.
UnderFor which caption, choose the caption associated with the element you want to link to.
The cross-reference appears as a hyperlink in the location you indicated.
