DCOUNT Syntax and Arguments

The DCOUNT function is one of Excel’sdatabase functions.

This group of functions is designed to make it easy to summarize information from large tables of data.

They do this by returning specific information based on one or more criteria chosen by the user.

Enter data in Excel

Entering the Tutorial Data

Enter the data table as seen in the image below into cellsD1 to F15.

Name the range in Excel

This is where the DCOUNT formula will be located.

Cell E5 has the headingTotal:to indicate the information we will be finding with DCOUNT.

Thefield namesin cellsD2 to F2will be used as part of the function’s Criteria argument.

Insert Function in Excel

Highlight cellsD6 to F15in the worksheet to go for the range.

press thenamebox abovecolumn Ain the worksheet.

TypeEnrollmentinto the name box to create the named range.

Search for DCOUNT

Press theEnterkey on the keyboard to complete the entry.

select cellF5, which is the location where the results of the function will be displayed.

TypeDCOUNTin the Search for a Function window at the top of the dialog box.

Insert DCOUNT function

press theGobutton to search for the function.

The dialog box should find DCOUNT and list it in the Select a Function window.

ClickOKto pop kick open the DCOUNT function dialog box.

punch in the range nameEnrollmentinto the line.

press theFieldline of the dialog box.

bang out the field name"Year"into the line.

Be sure to include the quotation marks.

press theCriterialine of the dialog box.

Highlight cellsD2 to F3in the worksheet to enter the range.

ClickOKto terminate the DCOUNT function dialog box and complete the function.
