What is AVERAGEIF?

TheIFportion of thefunctiondetermines what data meets the specified criteria, while theAVERAGEpart calculates the average or mean.

Often,AVERAGEIFusesrowsof data calledrecords, in which all of the data in each row is related.

In this example, theAVERAGEIFfunction is looking for the average yearly sales for the East sales region.

Begin by entering the sample data provided intocellsC1toE11of an empty Excel worksheet as seen in the image above.

Your worksheet will look different than the example shown, but theAVERAGEIFfunction will give you the same results.

Click oncell E12to make it theactive cell, which is where theAVERAGEIFfunction will go.

choose theFormulas tabof theribbon.

ChooseMore Functions>Statisticalfrom the ribbon to initiate the function drop-down.

Click onAVERAGEIFin the list to open theFunction Dialog Box.

The data that goes into the three blank rows in theFunction Dialog Boxmakes up the arguments of theAVERAGEIFfunction.

When you click oncellE12, the complete function appears in theformula barabove the worksheet.

Using a cell reference for the Criteria Argument makes it easy to find to change the criteria as needed.

In this example, you’re free to change the content of cellD12fromEasttoNorthorWest.

The function will automatically update and display the new result.
