After your Mac has found the latest update, clickUpdate Now.
If you see a Software Update available, clickUpdate.
Which Version of macOS Are You Running?

This will tell you the version of the operating system you have.
Update to Big Sur from as far back as macOS Mavericks (10.9).
Check with Apple to be certain your rig can upgrade to macOS Monterey before attempting the update.

Back Up the Mac

Connect anexternal storage gear, such as a USB, Thunderbolt, or FireWire drive.
Click theAppleicon in the upper-left corner of the screen.
Select yourexternal driveandthen clickEncrypt backupsandUse Disk.
Click theOnbutton in the left column of the Time Machine window.
After you clickUse Disk, Time Machine begins making regular backups of your MacBook Pro.
The first backup takes the longest.
Doing this involves cleaning your Mac’s disk.
