Before updating your MacBook Pro to thelatest version of macOS, check whether your MacBook is compatible.

This will tell you the version of the operating system you have.

Connect anexternal storage gear, such as a USB, Thunderbolt, or FireWire drive.

Click theAppleicon in the upper-left corner of the screen.

Select yourexternal driveandthen clickEncrypt backupsandUse Disk.

Click theOnbutton in the left column of the Time Machine window.

After you clickUse Disk, Time Machine begins making regular backups of your MacBook Pro.

The first backup takes the longest.
