Check with Apple to be certain your rig can upgrade to macOS Monterey before attempting the update.
SelectSystem Preferencesfrom the Apple menu in the Finder or select its icon in the Dock.
If your MacBook Air finds a new update, selectUpdate Now.

If it finds a new update, selectingUpdate Nowbegins the update process.
Depending on the size of the update, this can take a few minutes or up to an hour.
Open theApp Storeon your MacBook Air.

In the menu bar at the top of the App Store window, select theUpdatestab.
If a software update is available, selectUpdate.

When the update finishes, your MacBook Air restarts.
The easiest way is to use the Mac’s built-in Time Machine app.
Connect anexternal storage deviceto your MacBook, such as a Thunderbolt, USB, or FireWire hard drive.

From the menu bar, select theAppleicon in the upper-left corner of the Mac screen.
SelectTime Machine>Select Backup Disk.
