Use alt codes or the Character Map
Ever wondered how to punch in the trademark (TM) symbol?
What about other keyboard symbols or letters with accents on them?
Instructions in this article applies to Windows 10 through XP, and macOS Maverick and higher.

PressAlt+ [the number code for the symbol or accented letter].
For example,Alt+1inserts , whileAlt+0153inserts the trademark TM.
Here’s a quick list of some of the more common accented letters and symbols.

To turn on the Character Map:
In theSearchbar, entercharacter map.
SelectCharacter Mapto initiate the Character Map program.

Scroll through the list until you find your desired symbol or accented letter.
grab the symbol or accented letter, thenSelect.
The character appears in theCharacters to copyfield.

SelectCopy, thenPastethe character wherever you need it.
you might use theOptionkey, long press letters on the keyboard, or use the Character Viewer.
Select theApple logo>System Preferences.

In theKeyboardtab, selectShow keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar.
The Keyboard & Emoji Viewer icon now appears in the menu bar in the upper right.
SelectKeyboard & Emoji Viewer>Show Keyboard Viewer.

A virtual keyboard appears on the screen.
PressOptionto see all the symbols and accents available to you based on the country chosen in your System Preferences.
The orange keys denote the accents it’s possible for you to place on top of letters.

To pop in a symbol, pressOption+ the appropriate letter as denoted on the Keyboard Viewer.
To bang out an accented letter, pressOption+one of the orange letters, then the letter.
To turn on the Character Viewer:
In theKeyboardtab, selectShow keyboard and emoji viewers.

The Character Viewericon now appears in the menu bar in the upper right.
SelectShow Emoji & Symbols.
Choose the symbol or emoji to insert and double-click it.

Your emoji is inserted into your text.
Place your cursor where you want to jot down the accented letter.
Select theCharacter Viewer>Show Emojis & Symbolsin the menu bar.

ClickLatin in the left menu.
Choose the accented letter to insert and double-click it.
Your accented letter is inserted into your text.

you’ve got the option to also use this method to insert symbols or emojis as well.
Simply choose the appropriate list on the left of the Character Viewer.
Then, slide your finger over to the desired character and release.

But it’s also useful for enabling different language keyboards when doing any text entry on your rig.
TapLanguage & input(on Android devices) orKeyboards(on iOS).
The exact wording and location of this tweaks option will depend on your unit.

It can then be used with any app.
kick off the app you’d like to insert the accented letters in.
Some Android users can also tap and hold thespace barto choose a different language keyboard.

Choose the language keyboard to use.
The desired third-party keyboard is displayed.
slide in your text.

Or using this slightly different procedure for Google Docs:
Open a document in Google Docs.
In the menu bar, selectInsert>Special charactersand theSpecial characterspop-up will appear.
Find the symbol or accented letter to insert.

it’s possible for you to scroll to find it or search for it using the search box.
snag the desired character to insert it.
kill the pop-up window.
