Here’s how to use group texts to text multiple people using the iPhone Messages app.

This article applies to the AppleMessages appthat is pre-installed with the iPhone iniOS 10and later.

Third-party text messaging apps also support group texting, but they’re not covered here.

Creating a new message in Messages for iOS

Tap the new message icon (looks like a pencil and paper).

Write the message you want to send to the group text.

If everyone in the chat is using an iOS unit, you canname the chat.

Entering text in a new group message in Messages

OpenMessagesand kick off the chat you want to name.

TapEnter a Group Name.

Enter a name, then tapDone.

If there’s a busy group conversation, you may want to mute those alerts.

Here’s how:

OpenMessagesand pop kick open the group chat you want to mute.

Turn on theHide Alertstoggle switch.

Hiding alerts in a group text in iOS

A moon icon appears next to this conversation in the Messages list so you know it’s muted.

From that screen, swipe right to left on a group conversation and tapHide Alerts.

This only works if everyone in the group text uses Messages on an Apple gear.

Adding a contact to a Group message in iOS Messages

OpenMessagesand kick off the chat you want to add people to.

Tap theiicon under the pictures.

In theAddfield, start typing and either select autocomplete suggestions or enter a full phone number or Apple Account.

Leave this Conversation item in Messages for iOS

you might also use this process to remove someone from the group text.

In that case, instead of tapping Add Contact, swipe left on the person’s name and tapRemove.

There must be at least three people in the group to remove a contact.
