For copyright reasons, YouTube doesn’t make downloads available.

There are a couple of ways to use youtube-dl on Linux.

A straightforward way is to use the youtube-dl script from the command line.

Install youtube-dl on Ubuntu

you could install FFMPEG along with youtube-dl.

Ubuntu and Linux Mint

ForUbuntuandLinux Mint, youtube-dl tends to fall behind in the Ubuntu ecosystem.

You’ll need to add the repository if you haven’t already.

Install youtube-dl with Pip on Ubuntu

Then, install youtube-dl normally with Apt.

Fedora

Fedorakeeps updated versions of youtube-dl in their repositories, but you won’t find FFMPEG there.

For that, you’ll need the RPM Fusion repository.

If you use Fedora on the desktop, RPM Fusion is invaluable.

If you don’t have it, add it to your system and install both packages.

Install it with Pacman:

Otherwise, follow the steps to plant the graphical front end for youtube-dl.

Launch Tartube on Ubuntu

Open a online window, then go to theTartube Sourceforge download page.

SelectDownload Latest Version(the big green box) to download the latest release.

Save the resulting package to yourDownloadsfolder.

Open a terminal and change the directory to theDownloadsfolder.

Look at the name of the downloaded package, and install it with Apt.

opt for latest version of Tartube from the list.

Find the latest RPM package from the list.

Avoid the package with STRICT in the name.

Save the resulting package to yourDownloadsdirectory.

Open a terminal and change to theDownloadsdirectory.

Install Tartube:

Tartube is available in the AUR, so there are plenty of ways to get it.

Choose the AUR install method you’re comfortable with.

If you’re not familiar with the AUR, the following is the default method for installing AUR packages.

On GNOME, you’ve got the option to search for it.

SelectEditat the top of the window, then chooseSystem preferencesfrom the drop-down menu.

In theSystem preferenceswindow, selectyoutube-dlfrom the top menu.

Select thePath to youtube-dl executabledrop-down menu and chooseUse local path (youtube-dl).

SelectOKto end the preferences window.

With Tartube open, selectVideosin the upper-left corner of the window.

Go to YouTube and copy the URLs of the videos you want to download.

Then, paste the URL in the text box located in the middle of theAdd videosdialog box.

When you have the videos you want, SelectOK.

The main Tartube window appears, and your videos are queued up.

SelectDownload allin the lower-left corner of the window to start the download.

Your videos are available through Tartube.

you’re free to also find your video files in thetartube-datadirectory.

Change directories to the folder where you want to download the videos.

The–audio-qualityflag uses a scale from 0 to 9, with 0 providing the best quality.
