Putting a Bootable Lion Installation on a Flash Drive
This process has a few steps.
Finally, use your bootable flash drive to install Lion on your Mac.
Here’s how:
This process will erase any data currently on the USB drive.

Insert the USB flash drive into your Mac’s USB port.
FromApplications/Utilities, launchDisk Utility.
In theDisk Utilitywindow, selectyour flash drivein the list of attached devices.

Use theVolume Schemedrop-down window to select1 Partition.
check that theFormatdrop-down menu is set toMac OS X Extended(Journaled).
Select theOptionsbutton, chooseGUIDas the Partition Table bang out, and then selectOK.
Disk Utility will ask if you’re sure you want to partition your USB flash drive.
Disk Utilitywill format and partition the USB flash drive.
When it’s finished, selectQuitDisk Utility.
Your USB flash drive is prepared for the OS X Lion installer process.

On your Mac, go to the App Store download page forOS XLion(10.7).
OS X Lion costs $19.99.
SelectAdd to Bagand then complete your purchase.
Apple emails a redemption code for the Mac App Store, usually within a day.
Once Lion is downloaded, go to theApplicationsfolder and find the copy of Lion.
Right-opt for downloaded file and selectShow Package Contents.
Within theSharedSupportFolder is an image file calledInstallESD.dmg.
Right-click theInstallESD.dmgfile and selectCopyfrom the pop-up menu.
Right-clickin a blank area of the desktop and selectPaste Itemfrom the pop-up menu.
You’ve now created a copy of theInstallESD.dmgfile on the desktop.
Plug your properly formatted USB drive into your Mac.
Select theflash drive gear(not the volume name) in theDisk Utilitywindow.
Drag theInstallESD.dmgfile from the machine list to theSourcefield.
Drag theMac OS X Install ESD volume namefrom the rig list to theDestinationfield.
ensure theErase Destinationbox is checked.
Disk Utilityasks if you’re sure you want to perform the restore function.
You may be asked for your administrator account password; supply the necessary information and selectOK.
The clone/restore process can take a bit of time.
Once the process is complete, quitDisk Utility.
When your Mac’s screen turns off, hold down theOptionkey while your Mac reboots.
You’ll be presented with theOS X Startup Manager, listing all bootable devices attached to your Mac.
Use the arrow keys to choose the bootable flash drive you created, and then pressReturn.
