The instructions apply to Windows 11 and 10.

Connect the external drive to your box, then select theStartmenu.

In Windows 10, typebackupand selectBackup configs.

SelectAdd a driveto choose the external hard drive you want to use for your file history backups.

Doing this opens aSelect a drivepopup listing all external drives connected to your system.

grab the external drive where you want to back up your important files and folders.

You will now seeAutomatically back up my filesenabled.

It will use a default list of files and folders most users want to keep backed up.

To add more files and folders, selectMore optionsunder the toggle.

Review the folders underBack up these folders.

In the search bar, typecontrol paneland select theControl Panelapp.

SelectBackup and Restore (Windows 7).

From the left pane, selectCreate a system image.

In theCreate a system imagepop-up window, select your attached external hard drive in theOn a hard diskdrop-down list.

SelectStart backupto begin the backup process.

Depending on the size of your system, the entire backup process may take a while.

Give it time and check back later.

Once the backup is complete, you could disconnect the external drive and store it in a safe location.

Use Time Machine toback up your Mac to an external drive.

To back up essential files, manually move them to your external drive or use iCloud.
