How Google Voice Works
Google Voice provides a phone number.
Google Voice links with thePSTNthe wired landline telephone systemand the mobile internet to hand over the calls.
Google Voice offers a great visual voicemail service.
Any call initiated through it necessarily has to pass through the PSTN.
However, the PSTN doesnt do all the work.
The call is then handed to Google’s servers, which is where the numbers are pooled.
Say, for example, the call is directed to another Google Voice number.
The main aim of Google Voice is to unify communication channels rather than saving on cost.
How to Get Google Voice
Google Voice apps are available for download for the major mobile platforms.
Launch theGoogle Voice websiteand selectFor personal useorFor business.
ChooseWeband sign in to your Google account if asked.
Review the numbers presented and then choose one to use as your Google Voice number by clicking or tappingSelect.
Verify your existing phone number with theVerifybutton on the following page.
Enter the phone number that Google Voice should forward incoming calls to then selectSend Code.
So, it’ll look something likeG-9820.
SelectVerifyto confirm that the code has been entered correctly.
ChooseClaimto confirm you want to forward Google Voice calls to that phone number.
calls that used to be forwarded to your phone from another Google Voice account stop ringing that phone).
You might also see a Terms of Service and Privacy Policy screen.
Accept them with theContinuebutton.
For example, you may have your mobile phone, home phone, and office phone ring.
FromAccount, selectLinked numbers.
ChooseNew linked numberunder your existing phone number.
Enter the phone number that should accept Google Voice calls, and selectSend Code.
Return to the Google Voice configs page from step 1 and open theCallstab.
